A Tribute to the "Legend"

Nelly Mazloum

Nelly Mazloum created a codified methodological system of Oriental Dance Technique; based on her 50 years of research work and traditional dance teaching.

Its place is somewhere between the folk dance, artistic oriental dance and the academic character training of ballet. Her method is structured upon a comprehensive understanding of body rules, which permit the free play of systematic movements. Her technique is based on the habitual every day movement of Egyptian culture that conceives Art as an involvement of the whole self. All combinations and sequences have been created and arranged by the talented artist Nelly Mazloum with a careful observance of the nature of Egyptian folk dances and their original basic steps. Nelly Mazloum merely used the elements of the old folk dance and the “intonation” typical of the given dance or region in her compositions.

Her genius was that she developed dance movements of uniform type as if weaving them into a symphony, and then even the most primitive and simple of steps acquired a new beauty and a new message. Her signature style "Hawanem" is the dance of nobility dignity and majestic simplicity; it embodies lightness and fluidity, its graceful curves and fluid arm movements, its delicate lyricism, and deep feeling alternated with deep feminine tenderness.

In the her Oriental Dance technique  steps are not the main issue, or the correct position of the torso, head and arms, but of the feeling this with one’s entire being, and expressing it in ones dancing. Her technique is fluent and in harmony with the emotional message. She integrated music with the movement to such extend that it was truly difficult to say whether the sequence was created to the music or the music composed in harmony with the requirements of movement.

According to Nelly Mazloum the arms should express tenderness and love, but legs should be at the same time very strong, all movements must be precise, energetic and correct. Perfection is gained by hard work, there are no limits to one’s striving for perfection, and it might easily go on for ever.

The Egyptian dance in itself a theme of great scope, and if one is not engaged in its study in the vein of pure ethnology, it becomes an unfathomable, inexhaustible source of inspiration.

Students can find in the Nelly Mazloum "Oriental Dance Technique", information that will deepen their knowledge and inspire their creativity.

Marianna Mazloum showed marked signs of teaching talent and gradually she became Nelly Mazloum assistant. It appeared that she had a sharp eye capable of noticing the slightest shades of performance. This is also felt in her manner of giving a class. Her corrections are shrewd and helpful. Her emphasis on musicality, on which the art of dancing is based, is given particular care. “You should feel and hear the music with your heart, not your ears” says Marianna, “otherwise you will never use it fully in movement.”

Marianna's focus is not only on the technical aspect but on the artistic, cultural and historical aspects as well; thus, defining the different styles and background belonging to traditional and modern ways of dancing in Egypt and its five thousand years of cultural background. Her seminars are enriched with a plethora of information based on her mentor's data, studies and researches of the more than five thousand years of Egyptian civilization.

Each seminar is unique and covers new and original material.
